Base Camp

Base Camp is the core fundamentals training program at Base FX.  As the visual effects industry is growing quickly in China, Base made the decision to develop an internal training program based on its experience of successfully preparing artists for the most complex shot work, and brought many of the basic tenets of the company's culture - creativity, communication and collaboration - into a regimented, 72 day program that prepares young artist for the rigors of today's visual effects demands, and prepares them for the challenges and opportunities of the client services business.

The heart of Base Camp is pipeline training; how to specialize, integrate, and cooperate in a complex, fast-paced problem-solving environment.  The core skills of any visual effects artist, these traits are inculcated into the workflow of Base Camp to assure that artist candidates are prepared for the demands of the visual effects work completed every day at Base.  The program's goal is to develop artists to a globally competitive level, capable of completing high quality, high value visual effects shots.  Graduates of the program - Basers - are expected to perform at the highest level, assuring that they have the credentials and capability of working in any studio in the world.

Base Camp is free of charge to accepted artist candidates; at Base we believe that investing in our artist candidates is the best investment we can make in our future.  Candidates are selected by our Creative Supervisors and Producers based on a reel - this should be short (less than 30 seconds) and representative of the candidates best work - and a series of interviews with the company's HR, production, and management staff; artist candidates are expected to excel in character as well as artistic excellence.

The program features daily lectures from key Base staff about current work in progress, allowing the artist candidates unprecedented access to the best creative team in China.  Each day also includes lectures on techniques and processes invaluable for success as an artist, and lab time for exploration and completing the daily assignments.  A final project is assigned and supervised by Base's creative supervisors and management team, who take a hands on role in the process, mentoring and critiquing the work.

The program is the most rigorous of its kind in China.  Every four weeks the company's creative supervisors review the artist candidates work, and those who fail to meet expectations or who are unable to collaborate with their peers are released from the program.  At the end of 72 days, a formal review is held and all Base Camp graduates are formerly hired into the company, where they immediately move into support positions, preparing for shot work on company projects.
